IT Security Basics Every SME Should Get Right
Small and mid-size businesses are attacked as often as large ones. These fundamentals stop the majority of real-world attacks.
Attackers love easy targets
Most SME incidents start with stolen passwords, phishing emails or unpatched internet-facing systems — not exotic zero-day exploits. That is good news: the fundamentals block most of them.
The fundamentals
- Multi-factor authentication on email, VPN and admin accounts
- Automatic patching for operating systems and browsers
- Endpoint protection with central visibility
- Offline or immutable backups tested regularly
- Least-privilege access — no daily work on admin accounts
- Security awareness training with phishing simulations
Back up as if ransomware is coming
Ransomware groups now target backups first. Keep at least one copy offline or immutable, and test restores quarterly. A backup that has never been restored is not a backup.
Document and assign ownership
Write down who owns security decisions, how incidents are reported and which vendors to call. Under India's DPDP Act, organisations handling personal data also need reasonable security safeguards — documentation helps demonstrate them.
