DDoS Protection for ISPs and Enterprises: On-Prem, Cloud or Hybrid?

Know your attack surface

Volumetric attacks fill your links, protocol attacks exhaust device state tables and application attacks overwhelm web servers with legitimate-looking requests. Each needs a different defence.

Three deployment models

  • On-premise appliances: fast for protocol and smaller attacks, but limited by your link capacity
  • Cloud scrubbing: absorbs very large volumetric attacks by diverting traffic via BGP
  • Hybrid: on-prem handles everyday attacks, cloud takes over when links saturate

Detection is half the battle

Flow-based detection (NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX) spots anomalies within seconds and can trigger diversion automatically. Without good baselines, attacks are noticed only when customers complain.

Plan the playbook in advance

Agree thresholds, diversion steps, communication templates and escalation contacts before an attack. Test diversion at least twice a year so BGP announcements and tunnels work when it matters.

Frequently asked questions

Remote-triggered black hole routing drops traffic to an attacked IP upstream. It protects the rest of the network but takes the target offline, so it is a last resort.

If you are attacked frequently or host latency-sensitive services, always-on is worth it. Otherwise on-demand diversion is cost-effective.
